About the Program

Sites Participating in the Training Program

The residents undertake rotations at the five University of Toronto teaching hospitals.

At least 12 months of the 2-year CCM program will involve clinical rotations in Critical Care units. There is also a requirement to complete one month in a community ICU. Rotations will be customized to the individual needs of the resident.

The resident will participate in the day to day running of an intensive care unit, the supervision of all junior medical staff, the comprehensive care of critically ill patients, the inter-hospital transport of critically ill patients, and the organization of rounds, seminars and teaching sessions. The resident will gain significant experience in the administrative, quality initiative, supervisory and consultative roles required to function as an attending critical care physician. During each rotation and throughout the course of the 2 year program, the resident will have graded responsibility so that at the beginning they will be involved in primary care to a greater degree and subsequently involved more in a supervisory capacity.

Scholarly Work

During the two-year training, residents may also become involved in clinical or basic science research. This may be in conjunction with clinical training or occur independently of clinical rotations. Courses are also available at the University of Toronto in biomedical ethics, statistics, epidemiology, medical education, and hospital administration. Protected time is provided for academic pursuits, and some financial assistance is provided by the program for residents to attend approved scientific education meetings/forums.

Conference Stipend

At present, $2,000 is provided to support conference and course attendance. The registration fee for the Toronto Critical Care Symposium is also covered yearly by the program.

Calls

Residents act as senior residents with supervisory responsibilities. They are responsible for the supervision of junior residents and medical students. In most critical care units, the CCM resident is responsible for the comprehensive care of the critically ill patient. The type of call varies from unit to unit and also depends upon the resident’s level of experience, competence and stage in training. The CCM residency training program supports and follows the PAIRO-CAHO contract at
