Art Slutsky Academic Day
Art Slutsky Academic Day is the research highlight for our University of Toronto IDCCM community each year. It is held each June at the Munk School of Global Affairs and is a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to the leadership and legacy of our former University of Toronto Critical Care Chair, Dr. Art Slutsky, and to celebrate the important achievements and stature of our diverse pediatric, adult and interprofessional critical care community across the University of Toronto.
Additionally, each year, we launch the Art Slutsky Academic Day festivities with the Annual End-of-Year celebration, a very special event the evening before to celebrate the graduating critical care fellow group and our alumnae! It is a fun evening designed to bring trainees, alumnae, faculty and friends together for some final good-byes, good wishes and good cheer!

Keynote Speaker: Professor Carolyn Calfee
Carolyn S. Calfee, MD MAS is Professor in Residence of Medicine and Anesthesia at UCSF, where she attends in the intensive care units at Moffitt-Long Hospital. Dr. Calfee received her undergraduate degree from Yale University and her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She came to UCSF for residency in Internal Medicine and stayed to complete her chief residency and Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine fellowship. She also completed her Masters in Clinical Research at UCSF in 2009. After research training with Drs. Michael Matthay and Mark Eisner, she joined the faculty of the division in 2007. Dr. Calfee is also a member of UCSF’s Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education and an associate member of the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) and the UCSF Cancer Center.

Visting Professor: Dr. Adrienne Randolph
Dr. Adrienne Randolph is a pediatric critical care specialist at Boston Children’s Hospital and Professor of Anaesthesia and Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. She founded the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigator’s (PALISI) Network in 2002 that now has over 80 pediatric sites internationally.
In 2008, she developed the Pediatric Intensive Care Influenza (PICFLU) Network, which she continues to direct across 32 U.S. pediatric hospitals with ongoing funding from NIAID. In response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in 2020, PICFLU expanded into the Overcoming COVID-19 Network across 65 U.S. sites with funding from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Dr. Randolph has over 250 publications. Her areas of expertise are pediatric sepsis, acute lung injury, and severe respiratory infections in children. In 2023, she became Chair of the International Sepsis Forum.

Keynote Speaker: Professor Michael Matthay
Michael A. Matthay, MD is a Professor of Medicine and Anesthesia at the University of California at San and a Senior Associate at the Cardiovascular Research Institute. He is Associate Director of the Intensive Care Unit. He received his AB from Harvard University and his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and his Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine training at UCSF. His basic research is focused on mechanisms of fluid transport across the alveolar epithelium that account for the resolution of pulmonary edema. He also studies the pathogenesis and resolution of pulmonary edema, acute lung injury and the clinical counterpart, the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). His recent research has focused recently on the biology and potential clinical use of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem (stromal) cells for ARDS.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Greet Van den Berghe
Prof. Dr. Greet Van den Berghe is the head of the Department & Laboratory of Intensive Care Medicine at the KU Leuven University, Belgium. This intensive care unit is a large tertiary center treating over 3300 patients per year; adults as well as children.
Greet Van den Berghe is also full Professor of Medicine at the KU Leuven University and has been leading an active research program on the endocrinology of critical illness since 1995. She has published extensively in the field of intensive care and endocrinology. She currently holds a personal advanced grant from the Horizon 2020 Program of the EU and a Methusalem grant from the Belgian Government.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Elie Azoulay
Professor Elie Azoulay graduated from the Paris University, completed his training in pneumonology and critical care in 1996, and a PhD in chemotherapy and G-CSF-related pulmonary toxicity in 2002. He is currently the head of the Medical ICU at the Saint-Louis hospital, Paris. Professor Azoulay has been part of the editorial board of several international journals and the Editor-In-Chief of Intensive Care Medicine (2012-2018). He has launched both the FAMIREA and GRRR-OH groups for communication with families of ICU patients and management and outcomes of respiratory failure in immunocompromised patients respectively. Professor Azoulay has published more than 400 peer-reviewed articles. He has been actively involved in the Société de Réanimation de Langue Française (SRLF) and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM).

Dr. Marc Moss is the Roger S. Mitchell Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair of Clinical Research for the Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado Denver – Anschutz Medical Campus.
Dr. Moss’ research focuses on ARDS, early mobility and ICU rehabilitation, the role of alcohol abuse in critical illness, and burnout syndrome. Dr. Moss is currently the President of the American Thoracic Society.

Dr. Daniel Talmor is the Lowenstein Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School and Chair of the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
Dr. Talmor’s research focuses on early identification and treatment of critically ill patients, with a particular focus on the optimal delivery of mechanical ventilation.
